Recently, a life was saved in a Greek restaurant in Chania, Greece. Security camera footage captured the incident as a customer chokes on his food.
Take a look:
The video shows a customer pacing back and forth as he tries to dislodge the food that is blocking his airways. The customer’s girlfriend begins to aid by applying pressure to the man’s back. After over a minute of struggle, restaurant manager, Vasilis Patelakis, notices the gentleman and rushes over to successfully perform the Heimlich maneuver.
Patelakis shared the video to a local source to spread awareness about the event and bring attention to the importance of safety training.
What is the Heimlich Maneuver?
The Heimlich maneuver is a first aid technique that involves abdominal thrusts that lift your diaphragm in order to clear blocked airways. Although this procedure is easy to perform, it is always recommended to receive professional training before preforming the Heimlich on yourself or others.
The abdominal thrust approach should be customized depending on whether the individual is conscious, unconscious, pregnant or an infant.
If you are choking and need help, use the universal choking sign. Your hands should be clutched by your throat to indicate that you are having difficulty breathing.
